Module 6 Unexplained Mysteries of the Natural World

Period 7

 

Teaching contents: Cultural Corner and Module File.    

Main and difficult teaching points: Reading comprehension and cultural awareness of dragon.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Revision

  Review the usages of modal verbs + have done structure.

Step 2 Cultural corner: Warming up

  Talk about the cultural meaning of dragon in Chinese culture. (Why do dragon have a different characters in different parts of the world? What animal does the idea of dragons in China come from?)

Step 3 Cultural corner: Reading Comprehension

  1. Task1 Read the passage, find answers to the questions and complete the reading comprehension exercises in RB.

2. Check the answers to the questions and reading comprehension exercises.

(Western dragons were typically bad creatures which had to be killed; in China they were generous and wise, and associated with the royal family.)

  3. Listen to the recording of the passage.

Step 3 Cultural corner: New language items

  Task Learn the new language items in the passage to understand it better.

  1. fierce adj. 凶猛的;残暴的

  2. destruction n. 毁坏;[u]  destroy vt. 破坏,毁坏

  3. That’s quite something. (extraordinary)

  4. generous adj. 慷慨的;大方的,大度的;高尚的;有雅量的

 e.g. It’s garners of you to share your food with me.

He is generous with his money.

  5. unpredictable adj. 变化莫测的

 e.g. The weather in the mountainous region is unpredictable.

  6. The dragon was closely connected to the royal family: the emperor’s robes have a symbol of a gold dragon with five claws.

  1) close, closely adv. 用作副词时的不同意义

  2) be connected with/to  与……相关/相联系

  7. Other members of the royal family were not allowed to wear dragon symbols too, but with fewer claws and of a different colour. 其它王室的成员也允许穿带有龙标志的袍子,但是他逐们的袍子上少几个龙爪,并且颜色也不一样。

本句中的of a different colour属于“be + of + 名词”结构。该结构通常用来描述人或事物的特征,在句中作表语、后置定语或宾语补足语。常见的句型有:

1) be + of + 抽象名词,相当于be +这一名词的形容词形式。能用于该结构的名词有:value, use, help, importance, different, help, benefit等,这些名词前可用great, no, little, some, any, not much等修饰,以表示不同程度。

2) be + of + size/ weight/ height/ age/ colour/ opinion/ width/ type/ length等名词,该结构中名词前一般加不定冠词或the same。这个结构中的名词没有相对应的形容词形式。

e.g. The camel is of great help to the Arab.

=The camel is very helpful to the Arab. 在阿拉伯地区,骆驼有很大用途。

The two boys are of the same age. 这两个男孩一般重。

The two are of an age, but are of different height. 这两个人年龄相同,但身高不同。

8. reputation n. 名誉;名声

  9. positive adj. 正面的;积极的   negative adj. 负面的;消极的

  10. indicate vt. 指示;指出;表明;象征;暗示

indication n. 指示;指点;征兆;迹象;暗示

indicate sth to sb  向某人指出某事  

indicate that…示意;表明

e.g. The light above the elevator indicated that the elevator was then at the fifteenth floor.

电梯上方的灯指示那时电梯在15楼。

His hesitation indicates unwillingness.  他的犹豫表明不愿意。

A red sky at night often indicates fine weather the next day.

夜空呈红色往往预兆第二天天气晴朗。

There are clear indications that the economy is improving.

有明显的迹象显示经济已经开始好转。

  12. fortune n. 1) 财产,财富;巨款 2) 运气、好运 3) 命运 [u]  

fortunate adj.幸运的、幸福的    fortunately adv.幸运地

unfortunate adj.不幸的,倒霉的  unfortunately adv.不幸地,倒霉地

fortunate-phrases:

have good/bad fortune 运气好/不好     make a fortune发迹,致富,发财

try one’s fortune 碰运气              seek one’s fortune寻找发迹的机会

e.g. She pursued her fortune in another country.  她到他乡寻求她的财富。

He did not deserve such fortune.  他不配得到这种好运气。

No matter what they tried, it ended in fortune.  无论他们是怎么做的,最后都成功了。

She told my fortune by reading my palm.      她靠看手相给我算命。

She had the good fortune to be free from illness. 她运气好,没得病。

He made a fortune by selling houses. 他靠卖房子发了财。
