Teaching & learning contents: Extensive Reading & Comprehending (1)

Teaching & learning goals:

1. Get the Ss to read and understand PATT1 THE DREAM AND THE PLAN of JOURNEY DOWN THE MEKONG to have a general idea of this part.

2. Learn to use some reading skills to gain some detailed information about the text. 

3. Get to know more background information about Mekong River.

Teaching & learning procedures:

Step 1 Revision

Revise the contents talked about in the previous period.

Step 2 Vocabulary Previewing

Task 1 Match the explanations with the words in the text.

1. a wild fancy or hope n.   (dream)

4. to unwilling agree to sb’s demands v. (give in)

Task 2 Find out the nouns for geographical terms in the text

Step 3 Fast Reading

Task 1 Scan the text and answer the following questions.

1. What is their dream and plan?

2. Who are the participators?

3. Do they have the same attitudes towards the trip?

4. How did they prepare for the travel?

Answers to the questions:

1. Their dream is to take a great trip, and their plan is to cycle alone the entire Mekong River from where it begins to where it ends.

2. Wang Kun, Wang Wei, Dao Wei and Yu Hang. (Four cousins)

3. No, they have different ideas.

4. Both of them bought expensive bikes, got their cousins interested in traveling and turned to the atlas in the library.

Task 2 Find out the main idea of each paragraph with the help of the above questions.

Main idea of each paragraph:

P1 They plan to take a great bike trip along the Mekong River.

P2 They have different attitudes between them..

P3 The preparation before the trip & details about Mekong River.

Step 4 Careful reading

  Task 1 Read the text again to find out more information to answer the question in Exercise1 in Comprehending.

   Suggested answers to the questions in Exercise1:

   1. Their idea is to take a long bike trip.

   2. Wang wei planned the trip.

   3. The source of the river is in Qinghai Province and it enters the South China Sea.

   4. You can see the source glacier, rapids, hills, valleys, waterfalls and plains.

   5. The journey will begin at an altitude of more than 5,000 metres, where it is hard to breathe and very cold.

   6. (Optional) Wang Kun’s character: enthusiastic, critical, sensible

     Wang Wei’s character: imaginative, organized, eager, persistent, risk-taking

Similar attitudes

Different attitudes

Both Wang Wei and Wang Kun think.

1.Talking this trip is a dream that comes true.

2. They will enjoy this tip a lot.

3. They should see a lot of the Mekong.

4. Most of the Mekong will be found in Southeast Asia.

Wang Wei believes:

1.They must start in Qinghai where the river begins

2. They don’t need to prepare much.

Wang Kun believes:

1. It’s too cold and high to start in Qinghai.

2. Using an atlas is important

  Task 2 Fill in the form and the short paragraph with the information in the text. (to ppt.)

  

The Mekong River: It begins at a glacier on a Tibetan mountain, moves quickly and passes through deep valleys. Half of it is in China. It enters Southeast Asia. Then it travels slowly through hills and low valleys and plains, at last it enters the South China Sea.

Step 5 Consolidation

  Task  Go through the contents of the text by reviewing the ppt. to get a better understanding of the text as a whole. The Ss can have a try to retell the text.

Homework:

  1. Listen to the tape and read the text.

  2. Find out the difficult language points or structures in the text.
