The topic of this unit is customs and different culture. Today’s class will mainly focus on what people are supposed to do when they first meet someone from other country. The text book uses a conversation to lead in this topic, and it also provide us with some key words (bow/shake hands/kiss/customs) and some sentences (What are people in…supposed to do when they meet for the first time?/They are supposed to…)that we should focus on. Besides, this topic is very close to our daily life and can help students learn more about different culture. Today’s class will lay a strong foundation for our coming lessons in this unit. In addition, the tapes and videos this book provided will play an important role in our class.

a) After this class, almost 90% of the students can pronounce the words (bow/shake hands/kiss/custom/greet) correctly and know the Chinese meaning of these words.

b) About 85% of the students can skillfully use the words above in some simple sentences, and know how to use the sentence (What are people in…supposed to do when they meet for the first time? / They are supposed to…) in their conversations.

2. Learning strategies

With the guide of teacher, more than 90% of the students can actively participate in our teaching activities and can get to know how to use English thought pattern in their English study.

Teach students and help them understand that cultures differ from one another, we should show respect to cultural diversity.

Preparation (5 mins):

Play them a video (2 mins), the video is about British manner VS French manner. After the video, ask them questions

 What are people in Britain supposed to do when they meet each other?

(Answer: They are supposed to hug)

 What are people in France supposed to do when they meet each other?

(Answer: They are supposed to kiss.)

 to lead in today’s lesson—You’re supposed to shake hands.(write the title on the blackboard)

 

Pre-listening (10 mins):

1. Use PPT to show the students some pictures to help them learn new words. And let students read after the tape to practice their pronunciations.

1) Custom n.习惯;风俗

E.g. That custom has fallen off.

那个风俗已经废弃了。

2) Bow 弓;鞠躬;弯腰

E.g. She bowed and left the stage.

她鞠了一躬,离开了舞台。

3) Shake hands 握手

E.g. But I think he should show more respect and shake hands after the finish.

但是,我认为决赛之后,他应该给予对手多一些尊重,并与之握手。

4) Kiss n./v. 接吻

E.g. She planted a kiss on his cheek.

她在他脸颊上使劲地吻了一下。

5) Greet v.欢迎;问候;致意

E.g. Belinda greeted her warmly.

贝琳达热情地招呼她。

2. Show the students some sentence patterns, play the tape of these sentences and ask students to read after it, and try to use them in their conversations.

--In your country, what are you supposed to do when you meet someone for the first time?

While-listing (15mins)

Activity1: Listen to the tape and ask students to finish the task in 1a. Then, check the answer, the whole class answer the teacher’s question together. (Students should use the sentence “They’re supposed to…” to answer the question.)

Q: What are people in Brazil/the US/Japan/Mexico/Korea supposed to do when they meet for the first time?

A: They’re supposed to bow/shake hands/kiss.

 

Activity2: Listen to the tape and ask students to finish the task in 2a. Then, ask one or two students to give their answers.

The teacher give comment on their answers, praise those who did a good job, and help correct their answer if they made some mistakes.

 

Activity3: Listen to the tape again and ask student to finish the task in 2b. Ask one or two students to write down their answers on the blackboard. Then, the teacher and other classmates will check the answers together, if there are some mistakes, the teacher will help them to correct.

 

 

Post-listening (10 mins):

1. Divide students into groups (each group has 2 people), ask them to role-play a conversation between Maria and Dan, use the information in 2a and 2b, they can also add their own information in their conversations.(5 mins)

2. Ask two or three groups to make a presentation in front of the class.(5 mins)

 

 

Progress evaluation (3 mins)

 A brief review about today’s class.

 Make comment on students’ behavior during this class.

Assignments:(2 mins)

 Use the material in 2d to role-play a conversation

 Finish some exercises in the exercises book.

 

 

Use the video to catch students’ eyes, to arose their interests in today’s class, to help them focus on this topic and to lead in through a relaxing way.
