Module 1 British and American English

 

Period 8

Teaching contents: Speaking and writing.    

Main and difficult teaching points: Writing practice.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Revision

  Review the new language items learned in the previous period.

Step 2 Speaking  

  1. Task 1 (Ss) Work in group, read the notes after teacher’s brief explanation and decide which is the best variety of English.

  2. Task 2 (Ss) Work in groups, add more ideas in favour of their chosen variety and then present their ideas to the rest of the class.

  3. Learn the following words and phrase.

  1) add  vt. / vi. 增加;补充

add…to…把……往……里加

add to n.  增加,加强(后接具体或抽象名词如:trouble, difficulty, knowledge等)

add up + n. 加起来

add up to 总计,合计为

e.g. Will you add more sugar to your coffee?

The news added to his anxiety.

These figures add up to fifty.

  2) present v. 陈述(观点等);赠送;颁发  

present sb. with sth. = present sth to sb. 向某人赠送某物

adj. 出现的;现在的;出席的  be present at 出席  at the present time

for the present (time) 目前,暂时    up to the present   直到现在

n. 礼物;赠品;现在at the present time = at present 目前,现在

presence n. 出席,到场     presentation n. 介绍,陈述,赠送,表达

e.g. She presented her views to the committee very clearly.

   He presented the school with 100 computers/100 computers to the school.

   There are twenty children present. 在座的有20个孩子。

She presented her plans to the teacher very clearly.

   3) in favour of (revision item) To RB P6.

Step 4 Writing  

  1. Task 1 (Ss) Read the short paragraph in Activity 3 and choose the best title of the paragraph. (What is Chinese?)

   New phrase: refer to…as… (think of…as…, regard…as…, look on…as…)

   To RB P6.

2. Task 2 (Ss) Read the writing guidance on P11 in RB and then talk about how to develop a topic into a short paragraph with a few sentences.

3. Teacher read the sample writing in Teachers’ RB as an example.

4. Task 3 (Ss) Choose an outline in TB or RB and prepare their writingThe Chinese Language.

Homework:

  1. Complete the writing.

  2. Preview cultural corner.
